Preface It is not the intent of a Pocketful of Prevention to supply a comprehensive discussion of preventive services nor to provide information on the delivery of these basic preventive services. This pocket guide is based on the prevention guideline tables found in the back of the Report of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, Guide to Clinical Preventive Services, 2nd edition, March 1996. For implementation of the guidelines, the interested reader is also referred to the U.S. Public Health Service's program, "Put Prevention Into Practice," and the clinical provider manual, Clinicians Handbook of Preventive Services, 2nd edition, February 1998. The preventive services contained herein include only those preventive services that might be performed by primary care clinicians on asymptomatic persons in the context of routine health care. In particular, the Task Force recommendations relating to preventive services during pregnancy should not be interpreted as comprehensive guidelines for prenatal care.
